“Everything feels horrible. Everything changes. I thought ‘Oh, I would love to feel good again, and I would love to look good’. Having a bit of a laugh and being able to look across and actually see how many Māori wāhine had been going through the journey really helped me feel less alone,”

Community class FAQs

plus minus What are Look Good Feel Better community classes?

The Look Good Feel Better community classes are designed to support you in reconnecting with yourself in a way that feels positive, practical, and entirely your own. They focus on helping you navigate visible changes such as shifts in skin tone, and the loss or thinning of brows and lashes, with simple, thoughtful techniques that help you feel more like yourself again. It’s a gentle, welcoming space to take a breath, learn something new, and reconnect with the person you recognise.

plus minus How can I attend a community class in New Zealand?

You can book a class online through Cancer Support NZ, simply click the button at the start of this page or the Find A Class button at the top right of this page. There is no referral needed, and sessions are available in more than 40 locations across Aotearoa New Zealand. All sessions are free of charge.

plus minus Who can attend a Look Good Feel Better community class?

Anyone experiencing any cancer at any stage can attend. Classes are open to females of all ages.

plus minus What will I learn in a community class?

You will learn practical, simple, step-by-step skincare and make-up techniques to help with changes to skin tone, eyebrows, lashes, and overall appearance. You can attend at any time, at diagnosis, during treatment and beyond.

plus minus I have never used make up before, will I be expected to know what I am doing?

Not at all. These classes are designed for everyone, including complete beginners. Everything is explained step-by-step in a simple, supportive way, so you can follow along at your own pace.

plus minus Can a skincare and make up class really change how I feel during cancer?

For many people, it can. Taking time to care for your skin, learning small techniques, and being in a supportive space can help you feel more like yourself again. It is not about appearance, it is about confidence, wellbeing, and having a moment that is just for you.

plus minus What will I learn that I cannot do at home?

Alongside practical techniques, you will receive personalised guidance from trained facilitators who understand the effects of cancer treatment on skin and appearance. You will also learn tips tailored to your needs and connect with others who truly understand, which is something that is hard to replicate on your own.

plus minus What is included in the Feel Better Confidence Kit?

Each participant receives a Feel Better Confidence Kit, thoughtfully matched as closely as possible to your skin tone using your registration details. It includes donated skincare and cosmetic products to use during the session and take home.

While we always aim to provide the best possible match, the kits are made up of generously donated products, so exact shades and items may vary.

plus minus How long does a community class take?

Community classes run for approximately two hours in a relaxed, supportive environment.

plus minus Do I need to bring anything to class?

No, everything is provided for you. You are welcome to come simply as you are.

plus minus Do I have to participate or speak during the session?

No. You can take part as much or as little as you like. Some people enjoy connecting, while others prefer to listen quietly.

plus minus Are classes really free?

Yes, all Look Good Feel Better community classes are completely free of charge.

plus minus Can I attend more than one class?

Yes, you are welcome to attend additional sessions. You can also join our Skincare Support and Brow Focus classes online for continued support. As products are donated, participants receive one Feel Better Confidence Kit per year, so you are encouraged to bring your kit with you to any follow-up classes.

plus minus Can I bring a support person to my community class?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring a support person with you.

We understand that attending a class can feel easier when someone familiar is by your side. A friend, whānau member, or caregiver is welcome to come along and support you during the session.

Support people are able to stay in the class with you and share the experience. In some cases, depending on room size and attendance, we may need to limit this to one support person per participant so everyone can be comfortably accommodated.

If you’re unsure or want to check what’s best for your specific class, we recommend reviewing the class details at registration or getting in touch with the team beforehand.

plus minus Is this medical advice?

No. These classes provide practical, non-medical support to help you manage the everyday impact of cancer. They are designed to complement, not replace, your medical care.

plus minus Who are these classes for?

These classes are for anyone experiencing cancer, at any stage. You are welcome whether you are newly diagnosed, in treatment, or adjusting to life beyond treatment.

plus minus Do I need to be in active treatment to take part?

No. You can attend at any stage of your cancer experience, including before, during, or after treatment.
